Kickstart America Update

There has been a lot going on here getting videos creating and working on the technology backend to create a site where people living in camps can post their video resumes and traditional resumes so that when we launch the PR campaign people can be found.

We’ve decided to move the PR campaign closer to Christmas because we believe that there will be more attention then though likely more competition. There will also be more opportunities for temporary employment etc.

The teleseminars for small businesses by the helping 100 will begin right after the first of the year so that we can maximize the reach and so that those people can help as many small businesses create growth as possible.

Finally, we are putting out for bid our technology requirements for the technology we’ll be giving each camp. That technology will include a notebook computer, LCD projector, Screen, Camera, Speakers, Tripod etc., that will be required for onsite facilitators to deliver the training to the populations that they manage.

This is a project that was a lot bigger and more ambitious that I expected and I’m excited about that. It will take longer than I imagined to deliver everything, it will take more effort and funds than I imagined, but creating massive change isn’t easy. We’re up to the challenge. I appreciate all of your support.

Seattle is our next Kickstart America stop - Check out this video

I'm going to visit another major tent city in a couple of weeks, in Seattle. this is one of the smaller tent cities there. CNN just did this special report on it and a journalist lived there for two days. It is very indicitive of all the camps I've seen so far.

And, check out how this woman living in a Wal-Mart parking lot is using blogging to turn her life around.

An Unexpected Request of Kickstart America - What kind of business can you start for $100 or less?

While this probably shouldn't have been unexpected, I was a little unprepared to address it fully but I know many of you can help.

A lot of the people have been contacting me who are not homeless yet but are close, one small thing could push them over the edge, they are living literally day to day. The question they've asked me over and over again is "What kind of business can I start for $100 or less, something that can help me pay a rent payment or a car payment?"

I hadn't really considered that fully so I decided to begin doing some research, I found that Chris Guillebeau had writting an article on The $100 Business http://chrisguillebeau.com/3x5/the-case-for-the-100-business but there really wasn't a lot more. So while I have many ideas which I'll be compiling, I thought who better to ask than you to tell me what business you would start that could produce enough to pay rent for a month if you only had $100 to do it. Here are some criteria that I'm using:

  • Not MLM, the failure rate at around 97% is too high
  • It should be able to be run by just about anyone
  • It should not require them to have a list or other source of people to sell to other than those already in their social networks or whom could be developed locally
  • It should not require high marketing costs ongoing
  • It should not require specialzed skills that couldn't be gained by reading in a public library

My challenge to you is to tell me what you'd do, please leave your ideas in the comments here on the blog! Once I've compiled all of my research, I'll share what I discovered with you as well.

Thanks for your continued support!

Visiting a tent city in Athen's GA

I’m headed to Atlanta to speak at the World Internet Summit and while I’m there I’m going to head to Athens, GA where there is another tent city. This one is less officially organized than the one in Pinellas County and I’m not sure it will be a good fit for our efforts, I want to see for myself since I’m only going to be an hour and a half away. You can read about it here: http://www.onlineathens.com/stories/031308/news_2008031300252.shtml

The challenge with some of these tent cities is that they have no community liaison or support and it makes it very difficult to provide any kind of training to them. There must be some structure for our efforts to be successful.

I’ll be following this visit to what many consider the most organized tent city in America which is in Seattle. You can read more about some successful tent cities in this article from Mental Floss: http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/21689

The new KickStart America Website - Need Your Opinion

Kickstart_america_flat

Above is the graphic of the index page of the new KickStart America website. The black bar on the left will be filled with a graphic and text. What do you think of the header graphic? Do you like the tents there or would it be better with just the logo? I’d love to have your opinion. And if you have any other thoughts about the design please share them. No guarantee that I’ll change things but more eyes are often better. I appreciate your help.

We are moving fast now!

Again, the design is a ROLEE design www.rosalynlee.com
